07:21 pm: This sucks

Yeah, that's the metadata partition on an 80TB San. A second drive failed while the RAID was rebuilding from the first failure.

"Data was lost."

what would the Onion say?

Ah come on, they've got 80 TB of data, they've got plenty of data without that one measly partition. I mean, they have so much data they don't know what they're going to do with it. They should give some to the starving kids in Iran. And "metadata"? Come on, that's not even data, it's too meta to be real data. I know what real data looks like and it looks like pixels, not this ridiculous stop-light crap.

THAT SUCKS!!!
This is the scenario I always read about with RAID 5.

Tapes

Back up tapes??

Yup. LTO-2's. Three levels of them ("full" and then weekly and daily incrementals.)

The math on how many robotic tape swaps are going to be required is left as an exercise for the reader.

The only reasonable way to back up a large SAN is with another SAN.

RAID 6 is the only way to go on stuff like this.

Fuck that. In terms of this particular incident, 2 = 3. I'm going RAID 1 for metadata from now on.

RAID and Green computing...

In the same breath, a customer asked for a RAID 10 system for Green Computing. I had to turn away for fear of spit-taking my drink. TK
